Space Wolves and Salamanders Update

As you can see the Liquid Green Stuff worked really well once it was sanded back a little, his armour is much better and the cloak is great as well.
I also painted up the test Fenrisian wolf as well:
Fur - Bleached Bone
Skin - Astronomicon Grey
Muzzle - Dwarf Flesh
Then I washed the model with Gryphonne Sepia.
Then I washed the model with Ogryn flesh around the muzzle and ears and the fur edge.

Then a final wash or two of Delan Mud and Bhadab black along the top of the fur and around details.
Drybrush the fur Bleached Bone, and finish the base off and he is done.

I'm pretty pleased with how he came out and the ears look fine, just another 5 to go......cry!

And on a final note I have bashed this fella together as the next Salamander Terminator, he will round out the options for the squad I painted HERE.

That's all for now I should have more for you this weekend, as always comments are welcome.

Space Wolf reinforcements and Liquid Greenstuff.

Hi Munky fanatics...I know your out there!

This week I have been working on my Space Wolves again, to the tune of getting stuff finished off.
I've built another lone Wolf, Long Fang Missile dude and a Wolfguard with combi-melta to round off some of the more popular choices I use in my games.

The Wolguard's powerfist is actually from a Terminator, I thought I'd try it on for size due the way it was sculpted.

I'm trying to be a little more creative in my model construction lately.

You also can't miss the huge dude on the Thunderwolf in the background!

If you are wondering what the green bits are they are where I have applied a thinned down layer or two of liquid Green stuff, the reason for this was the model was seriously pitted and miscast on his legs and cloak.
Hopefully when I sand it back the finished result will be a lot smoother for me to paint.

I'l be painting up the Fenrisian Wolf I made as a test figure to see how it looks, I'm not totally sold on the ear position yet but we will see.

Anyway that's all for now Munky out!

Lone Wolf and Friends.

Well here he is all finished, this is the first Terminator for my Space Wolves as well which is a cool milestone to have.
I enjoyed painting this guys as a single model, the rest of my Wolves have been painted in batches.
It was a nice break from the norm.
He is not alone I have started work on some Fenrisian Wolves made from Chaos warhounds, I cut all the spikes and general weirdness off and have tried to sculpt some ears and a tail on one as a test figure.
Please let me know what you think on the placement of the ears etc, any tips are seriously welcome too
I am still a novice when it comes to sculpting!
The pic below is an indication on their size compared to other models.

Space Wolves get some love at last!

Hi everyone, it seems like ages since I worked on my Space wolves but I have finished off some Long Fangs I've had half painted for a silly amount of time.

These chaps have seen quite a lot of action, and my current configuration for the squad is 1-2 Lascannons and the rest missile launchers.....not very original I admit but seeing as I can't take 5 Heavy Flamers this will do!!

I've also started a Lone Wolf as I mentioned recently he has been of use lately so I thought it best he actually got a dedicated model!
The arms are magnetized so I can swap them about, all my Terminators are made this was so I get the most from the extra bitz in the boxes.

I'm still collecting bits and ideas for the next part of the Salamanders commission.....stay tuned for more info soon.

Blood Angels Death Company completed

Welcome one and all to another update from the Painting Munky, this time I have for you the completed 10 strong Death Company Squad.
These are the first "new" marines I have built outside the Space Wolves I collect and I am impressed with the detail once again that GW are squeezing onto the figures.
It's so detailed it's quite easy to paint a very detailed model without actually using any fancy freehand or transfers, a great point for painters who struggle with that sort of thing.
As usual these have taken far too long for me to finish, but that's how the cookie crumbles lately I'm afraid!
I've not painted black armour before on marines so it was a good challenge to find some colours that worked well.

What's next well I believe it is a Tu'Shan model (Lysander in game terms), I'm still finalizing some details then I will post up the plan for that fella.

On a personal note I have been playing a few games of 40K lately with the gaming group, we have rekindled the hobby after 6 months of no action.
I have found myself playing with Terminator Lone Wolf's in my games and Fenrisian Wolves too so I shall be making and painting some of them for myself as well soon.

Anyhoo thanks for looking and your comments are always welcome

My minis are famous.........well sort of!

I recently recieved an email from a good friend of mine in New Zealand regarding some Salamanders I recently painted for him.

It looks like they have been in action against some Chaos Renegades to great effect!

Please follow this link click me you won't be disappointed.
It's a gorgeous set of minis from either side and a very good report too.

Out of the wilderness......

Hi everyone,
I hope this finds you well,I have been gone quite some time....
I won't bore you with the reasons why instead I will bribe you back with some eye candy!
I hope you remember this chap from months back, he is now complete and ready for his first battle.
I have made the Power fists and claws interchangeable so that he can be equipped multiple ways.

It's been good to finally pick up a brush after months, I have a ten man squad of Death Company to paint up next as well.
See you all soon.

Salamanders commission cont............

Hello once again my fellow bloggers, and thanks for sticking with me all this time.

I have finished the Salamanders Command Squad complete with aftermarket bits as per the customers wishes.
I really like how these guys came out especially the standard and Lightning claw Veterans.

Well there is no rest for the wicked and I have more Salamanders in the works in the shape of Terminators.

This is the current state of them, they need highlighting and all the detail painting in and they will be complete.
There are 6 of them mainly so the Heavy Flamer and Assault cannon can be swapped based on their intended use, and the Chainfist is in there just add some bite!

The next model I will be working on is a Death Company Dreadnought, the Blood fists and Talons just slot in and out on plasticard rods.
Unfortunately the kit won't make both sets fully so I left the Thumbs off the Talons and filled in the recess.

Stay tuned for updates in a few weeks on this chap.

Also before I forget click here to see my models put to good use by Sandy in his campaign!

Tuesday 19 April 2011

Hello once again.......I am still alive........just!

I would like to apologize for dropping off the face of the Earth for a while, sorry guys!
I had a real kick in the sacks (figuratively speaking that is), with my day job being cut back to 4 shifts and my overtime being cut, put my whole mortgage and the life I was accustomed to was suddenly gone!

Then I received the news that my Nan had been diagnosed with that most discusting of illnesse's..cancer! the same thing that took my mother from me only 2 years ago.
Sadly she only lasted 3 weeks from the diagnosis, god rest her soul.

I have since then found another day job working with my brother in law and we have got life back on track, though it's not quite as bright and interesting as it was.

I will be returning to the world of miniatures and painting, and to ease my way in and lighten the mood I went to Salute 2011 at the Excel centre.

The following Photos are not mine but they really showcase the show, and I would like to thank the chap who took them for doing such a thorough job. (I really need a new camera my photos were pants!)
ONE
TWO
THREE

I really enjoyed the day out and even met a few friends from The Overlords and I was even interviewed for their show podcast!!
I will definately go next year with more cash, it's a fantastic place to see a tonne of game systems on display as well as more figures than you can shake a stick at.

stay tuned for more updates.

All the best Munky

Space Wolves - Army painting challenge.

I have been trying to get my long standing Space Wolf army off the ground and I've been struggling in the past, but in January I joined the Heresy Online Army Painting Challenge and it has helped me enormously.

I had a browse through the Forge World Model Masterclass which has given me loads of tips and ideas to try out, I'm still a noob when it comes to weathering powders and such but I think it came out well.

I just have to decide what to do for March?

Salamanders commission - Apothecary complete.

Hi folks, I'm back again with another model.
This is the Apothecary for the ongoing Salamanders commission, I had actually forgotten how much of a challenge painting white can be, but I got there in the end.
I went with shadow grey as the shade colour for the panel lines and it came out pretty good I think.
the choice of Gold for the helmet and Pauldrons was made by the customer from the Imperial Armour books, sandy really liked the Gold as a way to set the Command squad apart from the rest of the Marines.

The rest of the command squad should be finished over the rest of this week, and after them are the Salamander Terminators!

Cheers Munky fans see you soon

Monday 21 February 2011

Swarmlord finished.

I must apologise for the lack of recent updates but Real Life has been butting it's ugly head in far too much lately.
Any how I have been finishing this beasty off, I've actually fallen in love with these colours.
So much so infact that I may have to steal them for my own Tyranids when I get round to repainting them and rebuilding them for 5th Edition.

aside from this I have been working on a set of rules for a fortnightly campaign for me and my buddies, It's very rough right now but I hope to post them here for people to use.

Next up is the Salamanders commission including a scratch built Lysander!

Stay tuned

Salamanders continued.....continued?????

I have been busy building the Terminators with a combination of Forge World and Chapter House Studio bits to the customers requests.
Also in the mix are the Company Command squad, with Company Champion, Thunder Hammer and Stormshield , Company banner, Apothecary and Lightning Claw and combi-flamer dudes.
The Combi-flamer was made by trimming a Stormbolter to fit the flamer nozzle and tank.

The next model is the Salamander/Lysander conversion which I will hope to show in a few days time as that progresses.

Salamanders Continued......

Right Munky fans I am back!
And I am back with some more Salamanders, this time in the shape of a Command squad, some Terminators and a Lysander conversion to boot.

And after them comes the Blood Angels, featuring a 10 man squad of Death company and a Death company Dreadnought too.

The reason I have been a little delayed is this chap, a Swarmlord!
The eagle eyed amongst you will spot the left and right handed Bonesabres, I have been dabbling with casting my own components in resin.

Over the last few months I have been collecting the necessary equipment to do this and testing it all out.
The left handed Bonesabre has been sculpted by me and cast in Resin.

Now I would like to ask YOU my readers what sort of resin products you would like to see, I am considering all sensible ideas, components , scenery and gaming/tournament aids???

I you can spare the time to leave some thoughts I'd really appreciate it.

Regards

Munky

Chaos Dwarf Sorceror on Lammisu complete

Well here he is!
Now I know from some of my friends opinions that the model is a bit like marmite....either you love it or you hate it...I love it personally.
It's been an interesting departure from Marines, and as such I have totally enjoyed the challenge it presented.
I wish that GW would pick up with this race once more as they are quirky and quite humourous too.
But that said I must look forward to my own future, there have been secret plans in motion for a good few months now and they are nearing fruition!

Ha ha I feel like an evil boss now gloating over my cunning plan..........all will be revealed in the coming months, stay tuned for little sneak peeks along the way.

Monday 24 January 2011

Making my own banners.

I have had to make some banners for the Chaos Dwarf commission and I did not have a clue how to do it.

That is until I found this awesome series of articles by Ron.
making cardstock banners for 40k
making cardstock banners advanced
beyond cardstock

They have really helped me and I now feel confident to try making some for my personal armies, Ron you are the man once again!

I Thought I'd show this picture to show how I painted the detail over the pencil lines and then went back and blacklined with a brush to edge the detail and neaten up the banner.

Alternatives to GW

I was browsing the interweb-o-sphere today and stumbled across this amazing article at Hephesto's Forge about lesser known model companies.

The list is huge and took me by surprise as to the number of these little business' working away in the back ground.

I can't wait to find out what goodies lie in wait in this little gold mine!
It's nice to see that there is still a healthy cottage industry out there for the hobbyist.

Cheers Willem-jan

TUTORIAL - Tyranid Carapace

Hi everyone,
I have been getting a few emails about how I painted my Tyranid commission especially the Carapace.
I thought I would share my technique for doing it.

Now the thing with Tyranids is there is usually a bucket load of them and you don't really want to spend a huge amount of time detailing them, this technique is pretty fast and looks great when the Hive Swarm is all together on the table.

You will need:
A fine brush (I use a W&N 00)
A range of colours going from dark to light (Hormagaunt Purple, Liche Purple, Warlock Purple, Tentacle Pink)
A suitable dark wash (Bhadab Black)

After basecoating the carapace in Hormagaunt Purple I apply a wash of Bhadab Black and make sure it is pooled in the reccesses, you can drag the wash into the nooks and crannies to be sure, this is done quite heavily.

Next paint a layer of Liche Purple from about 3/4 of the way on each ridge to the edge of the ridge, This is the actual Purple colour which will stand out, the Hormagaunt Purple was just a quick basecolour.

Next with Warlock Purple apply streaks starting about 1/2 of the way down each ridge to the edge of the ridge, make these line thin and different lengths (sounds hard but you will get the hang of it very fast, there are tonnes to do!)

Next apply Tentacle Pink in the same fashion but do it from around 1/3 to 1/4 of the ridge to the tip, once again vary the length of your brush strokes, this is what gives the "perceived" texture.

One thing I must add is I thin my paints about 1 drop of water to 2 drops of paint to help get a smooth line.
